Gear Selector Module
These photographs of the selector module were provided by Marc who has an A210 Automatic Who I add is a highly qualified electronics engineer :- HND Electronic Engineering BEng (Hons) Computer Systems & Electronics Electronic Technologies for Sustainable.
That said Marc checked his own selector PCB for faults and dry joints, and work was required.
However in most cases you would be best advised to have this work done by a qualified electrical engineer.
ECU Testing.com are now undertaking repairs and testing these boards and guaranteeing their work for two years.
A discount off their normal price is available to my readers if they mention the site when placing the order.
This PCB along with the infra red sensors has been found to be one of the causes of the 'F' Appearing on the display, which causes the car to go into 'limp you home mode' which results in limited gears and speed.
To be able to select certain gears in the 'limp home mode' the engine has to be stopped and the car restarted.

Several points have been made in this photo :-
One that the small selector winter summer switch selector not be lost while stripping the unit,
that the PCB is open to contamination from the car itself, if you are a smoker then in my opinion you are much more likely to have problems with the unit than a none smoker, equally if you live in a country where the environment is dry and dusty this to could cause problems.
it is also very clear that the age of the car has a direct bearing on the problems on the 'Printed Circuit Board'(PCB)in a large number of cases it is cars produced in the late nineties early two thousand that are being affected.
A lot of these cars are finding there way to car sales and are being sold by their owners without the fault being disclosed to the new owner so be ware you could find yourself with a large bill before you have driven the car many miles.
It has been found that if the PCB is cleaned along with the infra red sensors It has been found that if the PCB is cleaned along with the infra red sensors the car will run normally for a few weeks in some cases longer but if dry solder joints are present on the board then the fault will re-occur and therefore the new owner will suffer the 'F' problem . the car will run normally for a few weeks in some cases longer but if dry solder joints are present on the board then the fault will re-occur and therefore the new owner will suffer the 'F' problem .
Bear in mind also that a large number of these cars are pre 2001 petrol pre 2004 diesel and so diagnostics tests can only be undertaken by garages with 'Star' diagnostics equipment with normally ties you down to Mercedes-Benz main agents and their high labour charges or an Independent Mercedes garages.
To avoid breaking the securing clips on the various components ensure the unit allowed to warm up to room temperature, plastic clip's on aged components will break easily when cold.

It is highly recommended that you not tamper with the (PCB) printed circuit boards and components thereon are easily damaged by over heating due to using the wrong type of soldering
equipment.
As mentioned above this task is best left to the professionals or you will damage the board and as result will have to purchase a new one, costing well in excess of £400.00
Purchasing a second hand board is risky as it may have the same faults as the one you are replacing
